Just found this article about solar system jewelry from Laura Cesari on The Planetary Society Blog. Gotta love this description...
A wearable version of an astrometric chart, with gemstone, ceramic, shell, and glass beads representing the sun, planets, moons, and asteroids, this solar system necklace serves as a decorative cosmogram, inspiring thoughts of the vastness of space. Distances between planets are proportionally accurate, with each bead representing approximately 20 million miles of Space. Planets, moons, and asteroids are enlarged for dramatic emphasis. Not for use in actual space navigation.
How about that? Links to the jewelry shop on the blog don't seem to be working, but you can find them here: http://makersmarket.com/seller/chainofbeing.
And before you get too distracted by the sparklies, do read the Planetary Society interview -- this gal is a hoot...
When my right and left brain argue, in a best case scenario they end up tango dancing in intricate mathematical patterns until they establish a "no-man's-land" of artistic-intellectual compromise: eventually they agree that YES, it's gotta be pretty, AND smart.

ReplyDelete"Not for use in actual space navigation."
ReplyDeleteROFL. Ya think? Love that!
As Will Smith said in Independence Day: "I gotta get me one of these!" Thanks for the links, Sharon. :)
OMG. That's GREAT! And you know me. The moment someone says "Not for use in actual space navigation", my brain takes off on "ooo...but what if it could be?"
ReplyDeleteMarcella, EXACTLY!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys enjoyed it. I admit I immediately bought the shorter, one-strand version.
Me, three - on using for navigation. Cool idea. Wonder if those would sell at the observatory.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love it! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteVery cool. For larger galaxies, would you need a belt? An astroid belt? (groan) Sorry.
ReplyDeleteOK, kids, how many of these "pilots fingering their necklaces" scenes are gonna pop up in the next wips? Cuz yeah, I thought the same thing ;)
