Meet the #Author Monday - Frances Pauli

Please tell us a bit about yourself:
I'm a long time brigade member who writes in too many genres. However, my first love is SFR and I try to get back to her as often as possible. I've been writing for too many years to count and a fan of science fiction since infancy. The Princes of the Shroud series is my first scifi series in awhile and I am thrilled to be playing in space again.
In my mundane life, I home school my two children, raise hairless dogs and tarantulas, crochet and watch a great deal of Star Trek.

Tell us about Shrouded:
Shrouded is the first book in the Princes of the Shroud series. The stories are not traditional romances, but have a central theme that is definitely romantic in nature. Shroud introduces the Princes, who live on a world with a thick, protective atmosphere and rarely interact with the rest of the galaxy. They are descended from seven original colonists and their genetic makeup is such that only sons are born. Thus, they have to import bride candidates in order to perpetuate the species. My heroine, as you might guess, is one of these Brides. Unfortunately her appearance is orchestrated by outside forces trying to worm their way into Shroud.

What inspired you to write this particular story?:
My novels usually begin with characters, but in this case it was the world and the culture that first inspired me. I was doing some studying about planetary science and became fascinated by the idea of a culture evolving underneath a heavy atmosphere. The seclusion and the nature of the Shrouded people then spawned the original two characters Vashia and Dolfan. Their story came naturally after that.

Please share a favourite snippet from your book:
My favorite bits in Shrouded are the sparring between Dolfan and his rival, Mofitan. (who gets his own story in book three) In this part, they are both convinced that Vashia is their heartmate.

Dolfan watched her slip back into the crowd. The girl behind her, the redhead, squealed again and pretended to faint. Maybe she was Mofitan’s mate. Maybe their little pissing match had been only a misunderstanding. He peered at Mof and shook his head. No. It had been Vashia that held both of their attention. Impossible, but undeniable.
“Murrel, dear, calm down please.” Madame Nerala tossed a pleading look in his direction.
“Oh!” The girl teetered. She wobbled in his direction and then swerved toward Mofitan. Her knees gave out a little too quickly and she fell backwards. He had to admire her commitment. If Mofitan hadn’t caught her, she would have cracked her head.
“Girls!” Nerala almost shrieked. “Back to your rooms, please.”
The women scattered into the plants. Mofitan held the still whimpering imposter. He cleared his throat and looked to Nerala for direction. The panic on his face earned him a speck of pity, but it didn’t last.
“Set her down,” Nerala ordered. “What just happened here, gentlemen?” Without warning, she turned her pursed lips toward him. She cast a suspicious glance at each of them in turn.
“The Kingmaker,” Mofitan released the girl, who turned her wide-eyed face up at him in worship. “I can feel her.”
“Good.” Dolfan nodded to Nerala. He pointed a finger at the woman on the ground. “She’s his Kingmaker then.”
“Not her.” Mof stood tall and faced him again. “You know which one it is.”
“I haven’t a clue which one is yours.” Dolfan felt his lip cure. He couldn’t help it. Mofitan had damn sure been eyeing Vashia, and he was having none of that. He growled and balled his fists at his side. “Do you?”
“You son of a—”
“Gentlemen!” Nerala clapped her hands together. The smack echoed to the glass walls. “Highnesses, please. I believe we can discuss this later.” She dropped her eyes pointedly to the woman in their midst. “After I have a little talk with Murrel.”
He stared at the girl. Her huge eyes dropped away immediately, but he caught the glimmer of tears there, and a wave of shame shook him. They’d been brutal in their rush to out snarl one another. He shook his head, even though she wasn’t looking at either of them now.
“I’m sorry. Of course.” He backed away, hoping Mofitan could pick up on the not so subtle cue from Nerala. They could hash this particular dispute out later in private.
All their little display had done was cue Nerala in to the problem and possibly hurt someone innocent. Foolish, perhaps, but innocent enough. Now they’d have to answer for it, both to the trainer, and to the women who would, no doubt, hear about the scuffle. She would hear about it, and he’d look like some kind of possessive brute.
Not the best foot to put forward, was it? He scowled and turned for the exit. The Heart would sort it out, of course. He’d only been riled by Mofitan’s reaction to his mate, a reaction that should not be possible. He frowned. Only the Heart would be able to fix the mess. They were just too far away.
He nodded and left the courtyard. Let Mofitan posture all he wanted, as soon as they took the Brides under the Shroud, the truth would out. The Heart would sort out the mess, and it would sort it out in his favor. He felt the pull. He recognized his Heart mate, and that booked no argument. The Heart was never wrong.
As he stalked the corridor back toward the atrium, he forced down the thought that Mofitan was no doubt counting on exactly the same fact.

Which comes first for you – a character's looks, personality or name?:
I almost always begin with a character's personality. I think looks and name depend a great deal on who I want the character to be and both can be used to symbolically reinforce the character inside. In Shrouded's case the cultures came first, then the characters and then descriptions and names.

Any tips for aspiring authors?:
Keep going. That's so cliché, and yet it's so important. So, I'll add  study, learn every bit of information you can about craft and industry and be educated before you leap into anything. But really, what it comes down to is keep going. Keep writing, keep submitting or publishing, keep believing in yourself, because that is what will make or break you in the end.
Write on!

Questions for fun:
If you had the power of time travel, is there anything you would go back and change? Why/why not?: No. (though it might be fun to go back and observe) I believe we don't have a big enough picture to know what the right changes would be. Everything that happens feeds into a giant puzzle of events, and I wouldn't want to be the one who averted a past disaster only to cause a larger one in the future!

What super-power would you choose?:
I just want to fly.  Really. It might not be the most useful, but give me wings!

If you could have three wishes, what would they be?:
I would wish that my children were always safe, healthy and happy. If that could count as one wish, then I'd add world peace and prosperity for myself.

Coffee, tea or wine?:
Coffee, then wine. Wine is lovely, but the coffee must flow! I love tea as a decadent treat from time to time (usually herbal) but Coffee is not optional.

What is your favourite book? (aside from one of your own!): The Year of the Unicorn by Andre Norton and very closely after that, The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip.

Favourite genre and why?:
I don't do this. Never could choose between fantasy and science fiction, not even as a reader. I love humor a great deal, and that can cross genre borders. Favorite genre.....hmm I'll take the cop-out. Speculative Fiction.

Favourite colour?:
Copper. I love oranges and Burnt Sienna, but mostly because they remind me of copper.

Upcoming news and plans for the future?:
Book two of Princes of the Shroud is finished and sent off to the publisher. I'm very excited about that one. I have other series running as well, some indie and some with publishers. My next SFR should be the sequel to Shrouded though. I have an amphibious humanoid series in the back of my mind as well as a time travel foray, but I guiltily squeeze some fantasy in there between scifi, so they might be awhile coming. Of course, there are at least four (okay, maybe five) Princes of the Shroud books planned too.

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!
Thank you for having me and for all that the Brigade does for the genre!

Trading Up

As primarily and ebook author, I think about promotion items a lot. I'm not proud of it, but if you hang out in author circles, on lists, groups and at coffee clatches, the topic is going to come up. I've tried them all too. Bookmarks, stickers, postcards, pens, fridge magnets...I even took a tip from a website and spent a good month stuffing my promo items into junk mail return envelopes--until someone suggested they would single them out by weight and toss my goodies without even opening them.

Well so much for that good idea. I'd spent far too much of my own money to throw the things away. I didn't even like to think about it, and at conventions, I developed the habit of scooping up any extras on that promo table before leaving the event, just to save them from the garbage.

Then one of my friends suggested trading cards. Pretty, collectible, cards with my covers on one side and the book info on the other. She's pretty brilliant. I searched and designed and printed. I took my little assortment of cards to the next convention, and it didn't take long to see that there wouldn't be any leftovers to save at the end of the weekend. Eureka, they love those cards.

Last week I stumbled upon a group of romance authors who either have the same brilliant friend, or latched onto the idea through their own clever intellects. I suspect the latter--especially because their cards are better designed, more lovely, and very well produced. In the spirit of the great idea, they've also opened up the doors to any author of romance. Come play, we're excited, they said. SO, naturally I jumped on board. Go Here and see for yourself how cool they are.

They make my cards look so lame. Go Here and you'll see what I mean...I went with the easy peesy old school baseball card look. Sue me. It was fun. ;-)

The point is they are so excited! They are tweeting and hooting and spreading the word fast, and the best part is they're ready to share the fun.

So what do you guys think? Dive in there, definitely, but also, wouldn't it be fun to have an official SFR Brigade template to use as a card border? What about a little SFR Brigade seal for authors to pop into the corner of their cards?
I know you all can come up with better than I can. Do you want to play a game?

;-)

New Year's New Release

There's nothing like ringing in the new year with a new release! Thanks for letting me share with the crew here.

New Canterbury Affair

SFR/planetary romance

Published by Devine Destinies

Release: Jan 1, 2011

Cover art by Angela Waters

Blurb:

Lierra drags her barely tolerable fiancé to New Canterbury, a planet where history is almost recreated for the nostalgic, human colonists. While preparing for their wedding, however, she encounters Forrest Ecks, her hero and one of the premier artists of the time.
Despite his fame, Forrest Ecks has little in the way of promise. Injured in the war, his painting career has withered along with his damaged hand. When the Lady Darvid shows him an E-sel full of amateurish, but promising sketches, Forrest takes on the task of teaching the woman. But Lierra herself proves far more interesting than her paintings.
Lierra’s engagement hovers ever closer, but more than her art blooms during her lessons with Forrest. With the little time they have, can they teach each other that giving up is never the best option?

Excerpt:

“Technically, yes,” she said. Collette made a noise to her right. Lierra had nearly forgotten her cousin in her fury to prove herself to a complete stranger. Now she heard the girl shifting from foot to foot. No doubt, nervous at the situation, at the man’s blatant disregard of their status.
“You’ve left something off.” His eyes narrowed. “There’s a but hanging on the end of that statement.”
“Yes,” Lierra stared straight back at him. Behind her, Colley squeaked. “Personally, I prefer his earlier works. The later pieces lack his initial passion.”
“But certainly, you’d admit they exhibit a great deal more skill?”
“Skill, yes, but without the emotion. I saw Woman with Yellow Veil yesterday…”
The man snorted at her, actually snorted.
“You dislike it? I’d say it’s possibly his best work.”
“I certainly hope not,” he said. “It’s sloppy, sentimental and amateurish.”
“Quite easy to say, I imagine, from the sidelines.”
“It’s widely considered,” He stole her earlier words. “That Ecks’ work became progressively more sophisticated as he mastered his medium.”
“Mastery is not a fair trade-off for passion.” Lierra refused to be unnerved, though a shadow of concern blossomed in her thoughts. There was something about this man, something intense that went beyond his fine clothes and long black gloves. “The early paintings had a wild edge, something raw and unchecked—”
“Reckless abandon?” The corner of his mouth twitched into an amused smile.
“Yes, in a way,” Lierra answered. He’s enjoying this, she thought. In truth, so was she. The debate topped Trent’s occasional, Hey babe, what you doodling? by a landslide.
“Sloppiness is no substitute for craft.”
“Craft is good,” she said. “But without the raw emotion it can come across as sterile.” Behind her, Colley let out another squeak.
“Sterile?” His eyes widened. Both of his eyebrows raised in a startled stretch. A warning bell chimed in the back of Lierra’s mind.
He stepped forward and gave the Ecks a good long stare, tucking one of his hands into the front of his coat and tilting his head sharply to the side.
“Interesting perspective,” he said. “Unconventional, but interesting.”
Lierra had no idea if he referred to the painting or her comments, but the chime of alarm escalated. She heard sirens in her head, stared at the glove tucked into his doublet. She darted a helpless glance in Collette’s direction. Her cousin inspected her own feet, demur, unhelpful. Lierra scrambled for something to say, but he spun away from the painting before her brain supplied any answer.
“It has been a pleasure.” He bowed, a stiff, formal gesture that might have soothed her had it happened ten minutes ago. “I look forward to more conversation over dinner, Lady Darvid.”
She stood frozen, knowing from the heat spreading across her cheeks that she blushed and that he noticed. The man knew exactly who she was. Her brain whirled. She managed a rather breathless, “Likewise,” and watched him pass, stride across the room and make his exit. The Gallery doors swung closed in slow motion.
“That was Forrest Ecks, wasn’t it?” She turned to where Collette waited. The girl’s horrified expression answered for her. Forrest Ecks, of course it was.

Spocon Ambassador

Last weekend I enjoyed a blissful escape to Eastern Washington's favorite science fiction convention. Spocon might be a small con in the grand scale of things, but the guest list reads like a who's who of speculative fiction.
This year we had Tanya Huff, Seanan McGuire and Patty Briggs. Let that sink in for a minute.
Now add C. J. Cherryh and artist Michael Whelan and let the swooning begin.
:-)

Thanks to our fearless leader, I had SFR Brigade badges to sport, cards to hand out and a great flier for the promo rack. We had at least three brigade members present, and I think, were a formidable force for the great name of Science Fiction Romance. . . at least, we didn't get laughed out of the room.

I did get into some great discussions and when the genre came up, it was met with serious consideration and even one, "there's a good market to be in." I took heart from that, and from the great reception and fellowship that didn't look askance at me because I wrote the romantic side of things.

Aside from business, the con was also immensely fun. If you're not a con-goer yet, let me tell you, you're missing out. (I mean, there are stormtroopers for heaven's sake) If you do decide to give the con circuit a try, or if you're an old pro at it, I think we have an opportunity to chip away at some biases and spread the word about our genre and our Brigade.

And have a great time to boot.
I can't think of anything better.

Space Slugs Party

One year ago, in the far, far corner of the blogosphere...

A story was born. It involved space--and mollusks. A Xenobiologist, a harlot and an android walk into a bar. Or something like that. The point is, there's a birthday to be had, and I'm old enough to believe the only reason to bother with birthdays is for the party and the presents. Nod along with me here.

This is your invitation to the party. Difficult to tell?
Wait! Here it is:

SPACE SLUGS ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Space Slugs will be one year old on Sat. July 10th. In celebration, I'm holding an all day facebook party at: My Facebook Page

There will be sneak peeks at upcoming episodes, favorite quotes, and on the hour trivia questions with FABULOUS PRIZES.....

okay, they're only sort of fabulous, but fun and campy prizes. :-D

Stop by for some super silly space action and trivia lunacy.

Lost in Space

Hello, Brigaders,

Still feeling like a newbie here, but it's Monday and my turn to report for duty. I'm having a fantastic time at CoyoteCon, and if any of you haven't dropped in there yet, set aside some time this coming weekend. The event has been amazing, and the organizers and participants are friendly and knowledgeable.

On the home front, I've got the new episode of Space Slugs up, an ongoing obsession with the new Espresso Book Machine, and my first release has hit the third party sellers. Roarke is a Science Fiction Romance published by Devine Destinies, and I'm going to take the moment on the stage here to plug it gently. :-)

Happy Space-faring!

Frances

Armed with only her wits and her inexplicably sharpened senses, she is forced to play along, to search for the holes in their story and to piece together the flashes of memory that serve only to taunt her.But the visions seem to confirm the impossible. The man who is supposed to be her fiancé seems bent on confusing her, and the one person she is desperate to be near may very well be responsible for her death. Look What I Found in My Serial...

I'll give you a hint, it wasn't a toy surprise.

Almost a year ago, I dipped my toes into webfiction waters by starting a free online serial. My thinking was to offer an example of my work and to put out that free read that comes so highly recommended. I had a goofy little SFR story that had been whispering at me for awhile, and I figured it was just silly enough that I could get away with giving it away.

Little did I know.

What is it about stories that grab you by the wrists and run? This one writes itself. I'm not kidding. I'm also not complaining; I'm enjoying the heck out of the ride. But seriously, a xenobiologist, a space harlot and a thirty foot, hot pink mollusk? Who wrote that?

Oh right. Guilty.

So now we're sneaking up on a one year anniversary, I'm planning the Space Slugs online birthday party bash, and I've never been more thrilled. Since I'm new to the crew, I figured I'd give you all a heads up on just how loony I can be. Stop by for a free read, but leave you tribbles here. I think Neela might eat them.
