SFRB Recommends 69: Blood Surfer by Debra Jess #superhero #sfrom

Welcome to Star Haven, where the police arrest and imprison alternative humans, if not execute them outright. When outlaw Hannah Quinn saves Officer Scott Grey’s life by bloodsurfing through his broken body, he winds up on the wrong side of the kill line.

Hannah blew any chance she had of escaping Star Haven when she chose to save Scott’s life. Scott has a reputation for killing Alts instead of arresting them. Now that she’s triggered his dormant Alt ability, he’s forced to go on the run with her until she can break his despised Alt power.

Suspicion dies hard after a lifetime of conditioning. Despite the threat to their lives, Hannah finds herself falling for the one man she can’t trust — and Scott falls for the woman who destroyed his life.

With love and mistrust at war in a city where betrayal can earn your freedom, will Hannah and Scott’s tenuous bond be enough to save them?

Jess sets up some young protagonists (college-age in many places) with interesting family issues. Hannah and Scott have some prized abilities, but that doesn't change that they are little fish in a bigger pond. They're forced to confront what they really want from their lives, each other, and the people who raised them. I like how Jess explores these questions. The ending is a Happy For Now, as I believe their story will continue.

SFRB Recommends 37: Phoenix Rising by Corrina Lawson #sfrom #scifi #romance #superhero #novel

This recommendation comes to you from Rachel Leigh Smith.

"He was born to be a weapon. For her, he must learn to be a hero. "

Since birth, Alec Farley has been trained to be a living weapon. His firestarter and telekinetic abilities have been honed to deadly perfection by the Resource, a shadowy anti-terrorist organization the only family he has ever known. What the Resource didn t teach him, though, is how to play well with others.

When psychologist Beth Nakamora meets Alec to help him work on his people skills, she s hit with a double-barreled first impression. He s hot in more ways than one. And her first instinct is to rescue him from his insular existence.

Her plan to kidnap and deprogram him goes awry when her latent telepathic ability flares, turning Alec s powers off. Hoping close proximity will reignite his flame, she leads him by the hand through a world he s never known. And something else flares: Alec s anger over everything he s been denied. Especially the passion that melds his mind and body with hers.

The Resource, however, isn t going to let anything or anyone steal its prime investment. Alec needs to be reminded where his loyalties lie starting with breaking his trust in the woman he s come to love.

Warning: Contains telekinetic sex, nuclear explosion sex hot enough to melt steel, and various and sundry swear words.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into my first superhero romance. And wow! It sucked me right in and I blew it through so fast.

This book hit my hero sweet spots to perfection. It was a story about the hero, told mostly from his POV, and Alec himself is awesome. A wonderful change of pace from the usual dark and broody tormented hero. Everything about him was a perfect balance combining to make him one of my favorite heroes of 2014.

SFRB Recommends #31 - The Anomaly Trilogy by @AnnaHackett #scifi #paranormal #romance

Book Description:

A woman honed in revenge and hunted for her ability to steal time finds her life depends on the man sent to kill her. On a mission deep in the wilds of Indonesia, a fiery mind raider joins forces with a dark, powerful man who is more lethal than anyone she has faced before. After being kidnapped and forced to kill, a soul stealer is left with a deadly addiction to killing and on an island sanctuary only one man calms the storm inside her. Enter the action-packed and deadly world of the anomalies: humans with extraordinary abilities that leave them hunted by criminals, governments and armies.

Includes a bonus short story, Salvation: do bad guys deserve a second chance? Two survivors will stand side-by-side to escape a dangerous laboratory and discover a scorching passion…and terrible secrets that could drive them apart.

The Anomaly Trilogy: Action romance (paranormal / science fiction romance)
Length: 90,000 words

Includes:
Book 1: Time Thief
Book 2: Mind Raider
Book 3: Soul Stealer
Bonus short story: Salvation

These were action packed, tense reads that can be quickly and easily consumed over a couple of afternoons. While for me the romance in these was a little too rushed, and there wasn't much complexity in the world-building or plot, if you like fast paced adventure, hot sex and tension a la X-Men style, these will provide you with an entertaining read full of angst. You can buy them separately, but the boxed set gives you the best value for money.

Meet the #Author Monday - Corrina Lawson

Please tell us a bit about yourself:

My website, in a fit of ego, claims that I’m a writer, mom, geek and superhero, though I like to say not necessarily all four on the same day. But it does basically sum up who I am. I’ve been a writer ever since I could put words to paper and I was a geek before that was a term of endearment. I grew up on rural New England, served two years in the U.S. Coast Guard, spent seven years as a journalist, and managed a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Nowadays, my life is taken up managing my four kids, including twins, though they are fast approaching adulthood.
And I write. I’m always writing.

Tell us about Phoenix Rising:
The tagline is “He was raised to be a weapon but, for her, he’ll learn to be a hero.”

The story is about a man, Alec Farley, who’s been raised in isolation to be a weapon but thinks he’s a hero. Unfortunately, his guardian plans to manipulate Alec into using his ability to gain power.
The heroine, Beth Nakamora, a telepath, knows what it’s like to have people exploit psychic abilities. Originally, she only wants to show him the world and the possibility of a life outside his very closed world. But she falls in love with his optimism and his innate idealism, despite the influences of his nefarious guardian.

Basically, Alec was raised by a Magneto-type, and Beth is the Jean Grey who shows him what the world can really be life.

What inspired you to write this particular story?:
This book was inspired by two things. My love of superheroes and dealing with my twins, who have special needs. It struck me that out-of-control superpowers are an excellent fictional analogue for autism, or mood disorder, or other elements of emotion and learning that aren’t always in the control of people, especially kids.

There’s a moment in the movie Man of Steel where Ma Kent comforts young Clark, who’s hiding in a closet at school because he’s overwhelmed by his super-hearing and can’t be around other kids. If that’s not a metaphor for kids dealing with noise sensitivity issues, I don’t know what is.

Alec has full control of his dangerous ability and he revels in it. The heroine, a telepath, is far more scared by her ability and overwhelmed by it. Between them, they bond, and teach each other a lot about what it means to have psychic abilities and live a normal life.

Oh, and they also learn how much fun telekinetic sex can be. J

Please share a favourite snippet from your book:

This is Alec and Beth, early on, when she’s trying to teach him a little bit of control over his emotions. I love it because it’s fun and captures Alec’s personality nicely, plus Beth’s growing fascination with him:

She shoved her hand into the M&Ms and tossed a handful at him.

“C’mon,” he said with disgust. Some test. He twitched a finger and grabbed the M&Ms in midair with his TK. They hovered, unmoving. He could toss them back at her but why waste M&Ms? He twitched his finger again and formed the candy into a line. He let them fall into his mouth one by one.

“Mmmm...” he said, swallowing the last.

She hadn’t moved, her mouth set in a line, but there was something about her expression that made him think she was amused. That wasn’t what he was going for, though that half-smile was awfully attractive.

“Was that a proportional response?” he asked.

“Oh, definitely.” She grabbed the bucket of ping-pong balls and tossed the lot at him. Like the M&Ms, he took hold of the balls with his TK with little effort. They were so light, it was easy to keep them hovering. He let his hands fall to his sides and began juggling with his TK. The balls zipped around his head and shoulders, faster and faster with each second. But he wasn’t watching them. He was looking for some reaction from her.

Her eyes widened. And her face started to flush. Interesting. Did she get turned on when he used his power? She wasn’t built like the girls he saw at the strip clubs but she was all in proportion and she had such a beautiful face.
.
He let go of the balls and they hit the carpet, bouncing to all corners of the office. He stepped closer to her.

Which comes first for you – a character's looks, personality or name?:

Personality, always. And usually the name comes hand in hand with that.

Any tips for aspiring authors?

Practice by writing. Keep writing, keep learning. Never give up, never surrender.
We lose too many storytellers already. We cannot afford to lose any more. Keep going.

Questions for fun:
If you had the power of time travel, is there anything you would go back and change?
Yes. My father died in an accident when I was eight. I would absolutely go back and save him. For that reason, the episode of Doctor Who where Rose goes back to save her father hit me very hard. Naturally, I never liked that ending and was so glad that her father later turned up. Well, an alternate version of him, anyway.

What super-power would you choose?:
Immortality. I have so much stuff to do and so little time. I want more time.

If you could have three wishes, what would they be?:

1.    That my kids would all be healthy.
2.     That my kids would all be happy in their lives
3.     That I could travel with my husband all over the U.S. and the World.

Coffee, tea or wine?:

TEA. Black loose tea. Earl Grey Crème is a favorite.
What is your favourite book? (aside from one of your own!):

Ah, it changes with my mood. My current favorite is Lois McMaster Bujold’s Cordelia’s Honor. That book makes my heart happy.

Favourite genre and why?:
Uh, this is the part where I confess I don’t just like one genre, I want them all. So, the answer is: multi-genre books with a lot going on: mystery, romance, maybe a little science fiction. The only genre I don’t read is horror.

Favourite colour?:
Blue, I suspect.

Upcoming news and plans for the future?
I have a steampunk romantic mystery coming out on April 29, The Curse of the Brimstone Contract. It’s my homage to the Sherlock Holmes stories I love, with a multi-cultural Holmes analogue and a female Watson.

Up, up and away! (One last time...)

I grew up on comic books, devouring the adventures of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman like candy. There were a lot of heroes I loved to follow, from Green Arrow to the Avengers to the X-Men, all of them taking place in a world something like our own but just *that* bit different. And by different I mean twisted enough to allow the existence of superheroes.

When I started writing the first in the "Blaze of Glory" trilogy I wanted to show a reason why superheroes would exist and battle on an almost daily basis with the good guys always winning but never quite managing to keep the bad guys in jail. And the bad boys (and girls) always somehow escaping to fight another day while the good citizens continued to work around this nonstop destruction and fighting. It took a bit of time to figure out the reason but I got it - all the fights were fixed!

By the time I got to the third book in the trilogy, "Heroes Lost and Found" releasing October 2nd, I knew there had to be some sort of final end in sight for our intrepid team of supers who had managed to break their chains and earn their freedom from their captors - a resolution and, in a way, a new life ahead of them. Which brings us to the final fight, the final battle for Jo and Hunter as they figure out who they are, where they are going and how they're going to get there.
And which heroes are going to be lost along the way and which ones will rise to the challenge...

Heroes Lost and Found, Blaze of Glory, Book 3

Jo Tanis is still recovering from her near-death experience in Las Vegas when she receives a mysterious postcard from Harris Limox, who claims to have a promising lead on the whereabouts of the Controller. Over her boyfriend/guardian Hunter’s objections, she sets off to a sleepy Oregon town to ferret out the truth.

The Controller is more than just a disgruntled super. He’s a rogue Guardian who was presumed dead and is now armed with a slew of high-tech hardware that not only makes him physically superior to the supers—and therefore almost impossible to destroy—he’s got the ability to detonate the implants in the back of all supers’ necks.

In Oregon, Jo meets a surviving Alpha super, Kit Masters, whose wild plan to capture the Controller could put an entire town of innocents at risk. But instead of successfully talking her former idol out of his disastrous bid to regain former glory, Jo finds herself betrayed and trapped in her worst nightmare.

Fight her former teammates, or die.

This is it - the final fight. Lex Luthor vs. Superman, the Joker vs. Batman, Hulk vs.... well, everyone! Who lives, who dies and who gets to live happily ever after...

And who is, in the end, a superhero.

Heroes Lost and Found: 4 out of 5 stars "Brisk and playful, Nantus achieves the perfect balance between romance and explosive action..."

Heroes Without, Monsters Within: 4 out of 5 stars "This sequel … surpasses the storytelling of the original. Nantus knows how to work with setting; the scenes in Las Vegas are vivid and accurate while the supers' secret lair is homey and comfortable."

Blaze of Glory: 3 out of 5 stars “Nantus has crafted a superhero novel for the 21st century with a spunky, stubborn heroine...”

"Blaze of Glory" - FREE!

You heard it here, folks!

Samhain Publishing has decided to make the first book in my superhero trilogy, "Blaze of Glory", FREE from September 1 - 14th.

*****
Saving the world is easy for a superhero—unless you’re a fraud.

Jo Tanis is a superhero, fighting evil on the city streets, using her ability to feed off electromagnetic energy and fire off charges—and it’s all just a show. The Agency captures her and others like her when their powers begin to manifest, pitting them against each other in staged, gladiatorial fights. An explosive implant on the back of her neck assures she’ll keep right on smiling for the camera and beating up the bad guys.

When Earth comes under attack, suddenly the show becomes deadly real. Unable to deal with a real alien, the “supers” are falling in droves. Millions of innocent civilians are going to die…unless Jo can cobble together a team from among the fake heroes and villains the Agency enslaved. Including Hunter, who not only promises to show her how to deactivate the implants, but seems to know more than he should about how the mysterious Agency operates.

Forcing a rag-tag bunch of former enemies to work together is the least of Jo’s problems. The trick is determining if Hunter is friend or foe—and becoming the hero everyone thought she was before the world is destroyed for real.

"Heroes Without, Monsters Within" Release Day!

I'm thrilled to announce the release of "Heroes Without, Monsters Within" from Samhain Publishing! This sequel to "Blaze of Glory" picks up right after the first book with Jo and her newly-christened team of superheroes dealing with the consequences of their actions.

Fight alone, die alone.

Blaze of Glory, Book 2

In the weeks since Jo “Surf” Tanis and her rough-and-tumble band of super-powered actors broke free of the government-sponsored superhero show, they’re all still dealing with the aftershock of adjusting to this thing called reality.

It doesn’t get much more real than a mission to dig survivors out of what’s left of Erie, PA, after a mysterious earthquake. A trembler that powerful is as out of place as Jo feels as the de-facto leader of the troupe. Not to mention the soul-shaking feelings she has for Hunter, a team member whose past as an Agency Guardian casts a heavy shadow over any possible relationship.

It seems one of the supers, an earth-warper named Ground Pounder, has gone rogue, using his freedom from the Agency’s brand of virtual slavery to put the “villain” back in supervillain. Failure to find him before any more innocent bystanders are hurt means the team could be back under the Agency’s thumb.

It’s a burden that doesn’t rest easy on Jo’s shoulders...especially when the man who’s invaded her heart is caught in the crossfire.
