SFRB Recommends: The SFR Galaxy Awards!

This month, the SFRB Recommends highlights the upcoming SFR Galaxy Awards.

The SFR Galaxy Awards give the judges the freedom to choose what they found noteworthy for their awards, so the award names are often creative in their own right! Here are a few inventive awards given in previous years.

SFRB Recommends 36: The Key by Pauline Baird Jones #sfrom #scifi #romance

I read this while reading through the Nebula Nights collection. Having read an extract, I wished to read the whole book. I was not disappointed.

Pauline has a sense of humour I love, which comes through clearly in this story. Given some of the tough situations the main characters, and particularly Sara, find themselves in, the humour did much to lighten up what could have been a rather dismal read.

The romance is good, and I loved the SF side of the story too. It all worked together, and the worldbuilding (or civilisation deconstruction?) is fascinating. A tale with a relatively simple premise, but some feisty characters that flesh it out. Not to mention the creepy creeps (villains).

A good read, or as I've classified it in my head, space romp.

Exclusive Cover Reveal: Farewell Andromeda

I'm delighted for the opportunity to present an exclusive cover reveal for my debut story and to tell you a little about my upcoming Science Fiction Romance release.

So with no further delay, world...meet Farewell Andromeda.

Let me first give credit to Danielle of Definition by Danielle Fine, the very talented artist behind the cover, an image that beautifully illustrates the location of the story--a remote space station at the extreme edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. (The multi-talented Danielle had an inside track on visually capturing the essence of the story because she's also the editor.)

I'm especially excited about the cover because:

1) It's unapologetically Science Fiction Romance,

2) The image perfectly captures the characters and their "natural habitat," and

3) The novelette introduces my upcoming Science Fiction Romance series.

Here's more about it.

What's a novelette?
A novelette is a complete work of fiction that's longer than a short story (which run 7,500 words or less) but shorter than a novella (which ranges from 17,500 - 40,000 words). Farewell Andromeda is approximately 16,000 words or 60 pages in length. Here's the Wikipedia guideline on word count.

What's Farewell Andromeda about?
Fresh off a painful jilting, the last thing deep space pilot Tiharra Bell needs is another romantic entanglement. Certainly not with the galaxy’s most famous astronomer—who also happens to be single, inconveniently handsome, and a resident of the remote Andromeda Station. But Tiharra soon discovers two terrible truths about Dr. Dante "Donner" Dane—1) he’s not the man he appears to be and 2) he doesn't have long to live. Before her fourteen-day layover is complete, she’ll put her life and career on the line to protect his heartbreaking secret.

Is it stand alone?
Yes, absolutely. Although there are ties, hints and clues to the upcoming series, this tale of love and sacrifice at the edge of the galaxy is a complete story.

What's the heat level?
The love scenes are more revealing than "sweet" romance, but less than "steamy." The sensual encounters are brief but very important to the character and story development.

How would you tag it?
I think the new label of Top Gun SFR would fit well, though there isn't a lot of edge-of-your seat piloting in this one. The heroine is very much a career professional and she "pushes the envelope" just by being what she is--a deep space, dimension-jumping pilot--so I think the category suits it. If you're curious, the Top Gun SFR label was coined via Brigade author Pauline Baird Jones in an interview about how she developed the tag.

What's the release date?
Farewell Andromeda is scheduled for a mid-January 2015 release. (It's being co-published through my agent, Amanda Luedeke of MacGregor Literary, Inc.)

Why does that title sound familiar?
The title manifested as a perfect fit for the story, but it comes with a bit of a homage to one of my favorite music stars. I dished about that earlier on Spacefreighters Lounge.

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE GALAXY?

Why does anyone cross the galaxy? Why to get to the other side.

Of course, you know I went looking for chicken-crossing-the-road jokes and was actually surprised there were so many. Here’s some, modified for our galactic theme:

Q. Why did the chicken cross only halfway across the galaxy: A: She wanted to lay it on the warp line…

Q. Why did the monkey cross the galaxy? A: Because the chicken got refried…

Robert Frost: to take the wormhole less traveled…

Captain Kirk: To boldly go where no chicken has gone before…

Sir Isaac Newton: Chickens at rest tend to stay at rest. Chickens in the wormhole tend to cross the galaxy…

Albert Einstein: Whether the chicken crossed the galaxy or the galaxy crossed the chicken depends on your frame of reference…

Darth Vadar: because it wanted to go to the dark side…

I know, pretty lame. The thing is, chicken jokes and space travel have a lot in common.

They are about getting to the other side. Or the other planet. Or from point A to point B. And to accomplish it in a time frame that is a) reasonable; and b) believable.

The first truth of writing (and reading) about fictional space travel is that it is (mostly) made up. While this seems obvious, since we haven’t managed to get a human being further than the moon, there are those who want only “reality” in their fiction. (Personally, I’d like a little more fiction in my reality. I think it's past time we got transporters...)

From the time science fiction first appeared, authors have been making up ways for their characters to move through space and time. Some feel more “real” than others, but they all require us to suspend disbelief in order to take the ride with the story.

Some of my personal favorite types of fictional space travel are:

Warp Drives and wormholes (Star Trek)

Hyperdrives (Star Wars)

Infinite Improbability Drive (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy)

FTL - (Battlestar Galactica)

Tardis (Dr. Who)

Starburst (Farscape)

Stargates (Stargate SG-1, etc)

Jump Gates/Jump Space (Lost Fleet, Dock Five)

In my own Project Enterprise novels, I use a mix of types, though I tend to focus more on the story than the science of getting around. I start from the point of: it just IS. The technology is there and now we’re off on an adventure, so that the hosing of my characters can commence.

When I went to mix some steampunk into my science fiction romance (Tangled in Time: Project Enterprise 3), I made the mistake of asking the scientist hubs if a concept I wanted to use sounded “real.” We ended up in this painful causality loop:

Hubs: But it’s not real.

Me: It’s fiction. Does it SOUND real?

Hubs: But it’s NOT real.

Me: It’s FICTION. I’m making it up.

Hubs: But it’s not real.

Me: You want my science FICTION to be real?

Hubs: Of course.

I left him with a puzzled expression, turning instead to a friend who is a physicist at NASA. I asked her the same question and her response was, “It’s fiction. It sounds fun. Go for it.”

I suspect your enjoyment of any science fiction romance novel will be predicated on how real the science is, and how real you like your fictional science.

In the end, the means aren’t as important as the fact that the chicken (or the characters) do get to the other side—or where they need to go.

Pauline Baird Jones had a tough time with reality from the get-go. After “schooling” from four, yes FOUR brothers, she knew that some people needed love and others needed shooting. Pauline figured she could do both. Romantic suspense was the logical starting point, but there were more worlds to explore, more rules to break and minds to bend. She grabbed her pocket watch and time travel device and dove through the wormhole into the world of science fiction and even some Steampunk.

Now she wanders among the genres, trying a little of this and a lot of that, rampaging through her characters' lives like Godzilla because she does love her peril (when it's not happening to her). Never fear, she gives her characters happy endings. Well, the good characters. The bad ones get justice. 

Pauline released her 13th novel, Relatively Risky, in 2013. She's not superstitious about it, well, maybe a little. But the whole loving/killing thing that needs to be done? Doing it fictionally is just better for everyone. And for Pauline, who hates the thought of getting strip searched and jailed.

KICKING ASHE Starting to Release! (First Sighting!)

With hearts and lives on the line, a kiss may be all they have time for...

Time has dumped Ashe on a dying planet and she needs to figure out why before she ceased to exist. Or gets vivisected by some Keltinarian scientists. Or worse. 

Vidor Shan might help--since someone somewhere is trying to hose him, too--if she can convince him to trust her. Probably shouldn't have told him that only someone he trusts can betray him. Also wouldn't mind if he kissed her on the mouth.

Vid would love to kiss the girl, but his brother is lost, he's got hostile aliens on his tail, and the stench of betrayal all around him. Can he trust the woman who told him to trust no one?

Then a time quake hurls them into a nasty somewhere and some when....

Kicking Ashe will release March 10, 2012 and wraps up my Project Enterprise connected series of books and short stories (at least for now!). Here's the blurb:

Two Short Stories release in new anthology!

While most of the short stories in this anthology are NOT SFR, one of mine IS and it's the lead short story in the anthology!

Comfort Zone 
Marrying a man she'd met once was a bad idea. When the guy was ET it was insane—even if they were anatomically compatible. He and his world weren't just outside her comfort zone, they were outside her comfort universe. I don't write a lot of stories where someone doesn't die or have to battle someone for something, so this is a rarity. It is just a romance story. Right now, it is only available in digital, at Amazon and ARE/OmniLit, but it should show up in print soon. 


This is the last anthology (for now) that I have stuff in, but I have to say, I like having them. They fill in the gaps between books rather nicely. I'm over at The Romance Studio having a release party for this anthology. There are prizes and lots of other books, if you feel inclined to party!
