The 2nd SFR Brigade Blog Hop - Come and Sign Up!

It's that time of year again! Midsummer is approaching, and this year for the Brigade's second blog hop, the event will take place over several days instead of just one, giving us more chance to spread the news and hopefully draw the crowds. I'm pleased to reveal the badge and banner for the hop (designed by Misa Buckley) and hope you'll add it to your blogs to help promote the event. A huge thank you to Misa for her stellar work.

This year's theme is Out of this World. The hop will run from the 21st to the 25th of June. A grand prize (or more than one depending on donations) will be decided closer to the time. Last year we were able to give away a Kindle to the first prize winner, and a bundle of ebooks and a gift voucher to the second.

In the meantime, you can find the guidelines and the sign up inlinkz listed in the Brigade pages at the top of this blog (just below the banner) and I really hope more Brigaders will sign up. Everyone last year reported a jump in visitors to their site during the event. Come and join us!

Huge congrats to them both and we hope you enjoy them.

Some of the individual blog winners were:

Jessica Subject - BookAttict

Mixed Book Bag - Anna M
Sue Ann Bowling - Maryellen Brady
Kitty Roads - Shadow
Pippa Jay - Krista
Imogene Nix - BookAttict
AR Norris - Pam - VanillaOrchids
Cathy Pegau - Diana

Findings:

First, a huge thank you to everyone who took part. For those who donated to the prizes, an extra thank you. Special thanks go to Heather Massey, Laurie Green, Janet Miller, Jaleta Clegg and PI Barrington who all contributed despite not taking part. You are AWESOME!

However, I must also say a huge apology to Natalie Wright, who's link somehow got cut from the inlinkz during the event. I'm still no clearer on how this happened, and I'm mortified. In the future I'll remember to copy the master list right at the start and use it to double check links during the hop. Also I think it might be wise to draft a volunteer to independently check the links.

Overall, everyone seems to have had a positive experience. I'm very happy to be sent any thoughts, suggestions and criticisms for ways to improve future events (yes, I am considering doing this again). The general conscensus appears to be that:

1. The event should take place over more than one day. Not only would this give visitors more time to hear about the event and stop by to comment, but also solve some of the complications due to participants being in different time zones. Two upcoming hops I know about are running over 3 or 4 days, which would probably work better.

2. There were technical issues with the inlinkz code, and I had to ask a few people to link back to the central list on the Brigade site. For future hops, I'd draft two basic hop posts with the inlinkz and required information for Blogger and Wordpress sites. It might also be an idea for participants to post before the official start of the hop so we can catch any problems early.

3. I need to appoint a second to double check all the links so that any mistakes I make/miss are caught.

4. Maybe try to find more venues to promote the event. I don't really want to spend any of the donations on paid advertising, or ask anyone to donate for that reason. So, if anyone has any suggestions on how and where we might be able to promote (and is willing to volunteer to do so) please let me know.

5. A lot of comments didn't qualify for the draw because they DID NOT LEAVE CONTACT DETAILS! I know most of you did state in your posts that we needed that information, but perhaps next time we need to make it clear that no email address = no entry in the draw. I think we all had enough to do with getting organized and posted etc without playing hunt the email.

6. There seemed to be some interest in producting a solstice-themed sfr anthology. Would anyone be interested in that idea? Maybe we could each write a themed short story to give away as part of the event? I know Liana Brooks did just that.

So how did you find the hop? Anything you'd like to add? Suggestions as to when to hold the next one? Prizes? Themes? Don't be afraid to shout out in the comments. Or if you'd rather do it in private, my email is pippajaygreen(at)gmail(dot)com.

Upcoming - the SFR Brigade's Midsummer Blog Hop

Pssst! On the 22nd June the SFR Brigade will be holding it's first ever blog hop to celebrate Midsummer and all things SFR! I can now confirm that the 1st Grand Prize will be a Kindle Touch or Nook Touch, with a second prize of over 20 science fiction romance titles from various authors and a gift card - available internationally. And, of course, there will be individual prizes along the way from each participating blog (some restrictions may apply).

So what do you have to do to win? Simple! Just hop to each blog on the list below on the 22nd June and comment. On each blog, this will enter you for a chance to win the prize on offer there, and earn you one entry to the grand prize too. The more blogs you comment on, the higher your chances of winning! (Only ONE comment per blog will count as an entry - no multiple comments).

And if you want to take part? That's simple too. If you're a member of the SFR Brigade just go to the sign up page here - http://sfrcontests.blogspot.co.uk/p/sfr-brigade-midsummer-blog-hop-sign-up.html
read the guidelines and enter your name, blog URL and a contact email into the form. We'd love to have you. And if you're not already a member and want to take part, there's a new and easier way to join - go here

Until then, a huge thank you to all the members who've signed up and contributed to the prizes - you rock! I'd also like to thank Heather Massey, Laurie A Green and Janet Miller who have all contributed even though they aren't taking part in the hop. In the meantime, I'll hope you all spread the word about this event. See you on the 22nd! :)

SFR Brigade Midsummer Blog Hop - April Update

Just a quick update on the forthcoming hop before my book tour starts, so you don't think it's been forgotten. Firstly, thank you to everyone who has signed up so far, and for all the offers of help, particularly on the promotion side. And thanks to those who have put the Blog Hop button on their blogs. Secondly, Heather Massey at The Galaxy Express has kindly offered to post about the hop and put a list of participants on her site. However, she does need the list before the end of May so can I encourage those of you who are interested but have yet to sign up to do so as quickly as possible? I know a few people are a bit hesitant because of technical details - if you're concerned about scheduling a post or adding the inlinkz tool please feel free to contact me. Most issues (if it's Blogger) I can help with, although I struggle a little with Wordpress.

I've been tweeting about the sign up at regular intervals and will be back to promote the hop as soon as my tour's over. I will be emailing everyone on the list so far with further details at that time. Meanwhile, give me a shout if you need anything regarding the hop. :)

SFR Brigade Midsummer Blog Hop Update

A huge thank you to everyone who voted and/or commented on the proposed hop, and especially those who volunteered to help. I've now set up two pages on the blog - one for signing up to the hop for those interested in participating, and the other with some rough guidelines. If you need more information or feel something has been missed out, please let me know.

Proposed SFR Brigade Blog Hop

Some of you may or may not have seen or taken part in the recent St.Patrick's Day Blog Hop last week. I know a handful of Brigaders were participating, including myself. Liana Brooks suggested that perhaps the Brigade should host one of its own, and I've kind of volunteered to set it up. :-P

So I thought I'd put it up for a vote. I've suggested a Midsummer one, since this is an astronomical and mystical event that might tie in nicely with speculative fiction as a whole and allow us all a free range on the topic we'd like to post. First up, I'd like to know how many Brigaders are interested in taking part, how many are willing to offer a prize on their own blog and/or contribute to a grand prize, volunteers to help out (begging here!) etc. I've left the poll open so that you can choose as many responses as you need, and add further questions you think are relevant.

So the basic idea is - this blog will host the hop. A linky tool will be set up for all those wanting to participate (about a month in advance), into which you will need to enter your name, email and blog/website URL. All participants will be sent a copy of the code for the linky so we can all publish the list, letting visitors to our blogs hop to the next without having to keep coming back here. On the day, a post will go live here announcing the hop and with the list up so that everyone has somewhere central to come back to. Participants will write a short post on a topic of their choice related to Midsummer's Day (or maybe if you have a similar solar event or festival etc in one of your books, you can post a snippet), including whatever promotional links you'd like to add and listing your prize(s). Visitors will need to comment with their email addy for entry to your contest, and for one entry to the main prize if we have one. The more blogs they comment on, the better their chances of winning the grand prize. I'd like to suggest that it isn't a requirement for guests to sign up to newsletters/follow blogs etc as part of the conditions for entry, but that's entirely up to each participant.

Because of the time differences between some members I'm going to have to figure out some times, and how long the contest will actually run for - I'll have to get back to you on that. But, depending on the number of participants, I may need one or two peeps just to help me check all the links in the linky are up and valid - any that just seem to lead to an advert rather than a post or are broken may be deleted. At the end of the hop, I'll collect up all the entries and chose a grand winner. Each participant will be responsible for choosing and announcing the individual winner on their own blog. For an example of how blog hops work, you can check out Carrie Ann Ryan's recent St.Patrick's Day Hop here.

Now, Midsummer's Day is the 24th June which I know might be an issue for the Six Sentence Sunday peeps. But the actual summer solstice is the 20th June at 23.09. So perhaps Friday the 21st might be the best day to hold it? Or I could set it to start at the moment of solstice if everyone can schedule their blog posts to go live then. Any suggestions, thoughts etc are very welcome!
